Renovation Concept of Steam Boiler, Bavaria

The project for replacing the blower of the steam boiler at the combined heat and power plant in Bavaria involved dismantling the old blower and installing a new blower system. The aim was to place the new unit on the existing foundations and connect it seamlessly to the existing boiler ducts in order to make maximum use of the existing infrastructure and conserve resources. Precise 3D scanning using point cloud technology enabled exact measurement of the existing structure, allowing millimeter-accurate placement of the new equipment and minimizing project costs for the client. The duct support system as well as additional maintenance areas for the new equipment were specially planned to ensure long-term operational safety and ease of maintenance. In addition, detailed models, static calculations, and comprehensive workshop and construction plans were created to ensure smooth dismantling and installation and to enable subsequent commissioning without delays.

Challenges

One of the greatest challenges was the tight spatial integration of the new blower into the existing boiler structure, which required precise adjustments and detailed coordination between all trades involved. Particularly demanding was the consideration of structural loads, as the new blower had to be securely installed on the existing foundations. Working in confined spaces and handling heavy components presented additional logistical difficulties. Moreover, the steam boiler system remained operational during the renovation phase, necessitating meticulous planning to ensure operational safety and schedule adherence while minimizing downtime.

Project phases

01

Requirements Analysis

In this initial phase, the requirements for the new blower were thoroughly recorded and the project goals coordinated with the client. This included technical specifications, positioning, and safety requirements during the construction work.

02

Surveying with 3D Laser Scanning

The existing structure was captured with millimeter precision using 3D laser scanning. These data provided the foundation for the accurate planning and integration of the new blower into the existing structures.

03

As-Built Modeling

A digital 3D model was created from the scan data, containing all components and connection points. This allowed realistic planning of the new system and early detection of potential conflicts.

04

Design LPH 3 and Concept

A technical concept for integration onto existing foundations and ducts was developed. Various options were evaluated to define a technically and economically optimal solution.

05

Approval Planning LPH 4

The final planning was transferred into approval documents and prepared for release. Technical standards were taken into account, and client requirements were incorporated into the implementation.

06

Implementation Planning LPH 5

Workshop and installation drawings were created to enable orderly dismantling and precise assembly. Adjustments to foundations and ducts were also described in detail.
